Chapter Eight – I Speak Because I Can

Spontaneous celebration party alert! Somehow, the wisdom of which will be determined in an hour or so, our producer has managed to procure the ballroom here in the Big House to let us loose in. The wardrobe department (I can’t even think the word “wardrobe” without the image of sneaky ones with hidden doors coming to mind) has been put to good use, kitting us out with the costume of our choosing from the racks. It was only the ones used in this production so I couldn’t go as She-Ra: Princess of Power, and I could only wear something I fitted into, but it was otherwise a free-for-all. Sharp-elbowed Samantha managed to bag me a gorgeous heavage-producing gown she had worn in a scene in the first episode, so now I look and feel like a daring duchess!

She, to my utter surprise, has come as a gentleman, sporting some very tight, sexy breeches along with those all-important riding boots, a silk waistcoat in silver, and a fine cut-away topcoat in blue velvet. She has her hair tied back in a tight bow and has a pencil-thin line drawn upon her top lip for a moustache, as if that would fool us all. I also notice that she has had the girls in make-up do her some very subtle work, and you have to be right up close to realise that those soft, very kissable lips of hers are not actually bare. I have been careful not to wade into the alcohol so far, wanting to make sure I know exactly what is being said to me this time, but still I feel oddly skittish and flighty around her tonight – excited but unsure whether I’m able to trust my actions or my tongue.

Her husband has come as a soldier, complete with very impressive sword. Let’s just say he does more justice to the honourable uniform than the disgraced Marcus Marshall. The butterfly jury inside me is still out as to whether he cuts an even more dashing cloth like this than he does as the master of the house. I imagine he has already fleshed out in his mind the character of gentlemanly soldier – just another layer to add when the occasion requires it. The hair is smoother, and slightly combed forward to leave a few strands close to his cheek. The sideburns have gone. The scarlet jacket is fabulous and it’s perhaps a neater look all round, but I cannot decide if I prefer him quite so sharp. The sense of protector is strengthened, but it takes away the wildness. He is still, however, absolutely compelling. It is ridiculous how vital he is becoming to my daily happiness, considering how little contact we’ve had.

Rory has also come as a soldier. As long as he doesn’t stand right next to Bennett he will also have a lot of females drooling pointlessly all over him by the end of the evening. The pervy Mr Marshall has come rather plainly as a clergyman, and the irony is not lost on me.
